Publication: A comparative study of Kuy varieties in Cambodia

| dc.description.abstract | Kuy is a Katuic language in the Mon-Khmer language family. The goal of this thesis is to identify and compare the basic speech varieties of Kuy in Cambodia. A number of investigative measures are employed, including: comparing wordlists by both lexicostatistic and comparative methods; analyzing sociolinguistic data on language use and vitality; and testing comprehension. By comparing the results of these measures, patterns of Kuy linguistic organization emerge. These patterns include: emic categories; lexical gradation and historical phonological grouping of speech varieties; and patterns of comprehension, language use and vitality. Results indicate that the lexical relationship between the Kuy speech varieties studied ranges from 82% to 100% similarity. Among these speech varieties, four dialects are identified: Kuy Nira, Kuy Ntua, Kuy Mai and Kuy Mla. These dialects are confirmed by sociolinguistic, lexicostatistic and comparative evidence. Phonological reconstruction shows that the varieties are very similar, with few sound change rules. Kuy Mai is more innovative and Kuy Ntra is more conservative, with Kuy Mla and Kuy Ntua in between. Kuy Ntra speakers averaged 87.5% comprehension on a Kuy Ntua story, and Kuy Ntua speakers averaged 87% comprehension on a Kuy Ntra story. | |
