Abstract
This paper examins Thai students of Japanese usage of sentence linkage in their Japanese essays. In Japanese, conjunctions can be omitted, whereas Thai learners tend to make frequent usage of them.
I surveyed the types of sentences used in Thai learners’ essays and compared them with those of Japanese writers. I found that Thai learners use almost double the number of simple sentences Japanese writers use, with only half the number of coordinate clauses. Moreover, while the Japanese use different substitutional forms, such as pronouns and demonstratives, as cohesive devices, Thai learners tend to repeat the same vocabulary.
