dc.description.abstractThe objectives of this thesis paper were as follows : 1) to study epistemology in Hindu Philosophy, 2) to study its counterpart in Theravada Buddhist philosophy and 3) to compare epistemology in the philosophy of Hinduism and Theravada Buddhism. It is a qualitative study, which is based on the texts of Tipitaka and its commentaries and also on all the texts on Buddhist life living in accordance with Right Livelihood. The research is conducted by means o f classifying and arranging the texts in various chapters in conformity with its themes. The results of the research were found as follows 1. Epistemology in Hindu Philosophy means to acquire knowledge Contained in the teachings of the Department of Philosophy Teachers that is Nyaya Vaisesika Sankhya Yoga Mimamsa and Vedanta. Which is based on the teachings in Vedie Texts Although each school has a different ideas on the subject of source of knowledge and Criteria for knowledge Have the same goal that is the end of suffering in this life or Moksha, the end of suffering in this life w ill be first out of ignorance. 2. Epistemology in Theravada Buddhist philosophy means to acquire knowledge is wisdom for the end of suffering and get rid of ignorance. After depletion of ignorance enlightenment w ill come up and individual access to that knowledge w ill understand the true nature. 3. Epistemology in the philosophy of Hinduism and Theravada Buddhism There are similarities and differences that is the similarities include the out o f ignorance but the differences were the out of ignorance of philosophy of Hinduism is how to live together with Brahman but Theravada Buddhist philosophy believe that the out of ignorance not related to Brahman. Theravada Buddhism believe that Sensory system and ideas not to be true, access to real knowledge must be accessed by only intuition obtained from Bhavanamaya-panna in Theravada Buddhism is not intuition obtained from Yoga concentration in philosophy of Hinduism.
