Abstract
The thesis’s objective is to study in a comparative way the PhraBrahmagunaborn (P.A. Payutto)’s Concept of Buddhist Holistic Health and the Concept of Gross National Happiness (GNH) of Bhutan. The points of comparison are the meaning of happiness, causality or sources of happiness and the way or process that leads to happiness. The results of study are as followings
in the respect of similarity, both PhraBrahmagunaborn (P.A. Payutto) and the organizer of Gross National Happiness (GNH) of Bhutan share the similar idea of the meaning of happiness according to the Buddhist concept, that is, happiness is a condition having been arisen from internal factors. The true happiness is the condition of free mind that is independent from external factors, having potentiality in order to achieve the wisdom by which one can hold upon to gain the freedom of life. Both of them still opinion that in order to seek after or to develop happiness, it can be done with seeing all things in a holistic way, of all connected dimensions, i.e., life, society and nature. In the respect of highest aim of happiness, however, both of them have different opinions, that is, PhraBrahmagunaborn (P.A. Payutto) points to the condition that free from all suffering that is Nibbana in Theravada perspective, while organizer of Gross National Happiness (GNH) of Bhutan points to Bodhisatva ideal, that is the happiness and health of all living beings according to Mahayana concept. For the respect of causality or sources of happiness, both of thoughts agree with one another that the sources of happiness can be viewed in a holistic dimension which is relative to all human beings in four respects, i.e., bodily, social, mental and wisdom. Organizer of Gross National Happiness (GNH) of Bhutan, however, develops this further by bringing this to be applied in all activities of human life which includes cultural dimension and good governance. For the last topic, the path leading to the happiness, both of thoughts show the Buddhist way to happiness through bodily mental and wisdom in order to the integrative happiness of life, society and nature. In this respect, the Phra Brahmagunaborn (P.A. Payutto)’ idea is outstanding in systemizing the holistic concepts of health and presenting it order clearly. While the concept of Gross National Happiness (GNH) of Bhutan is distinguish in applying those concept in bringing about the happiness to society by pushing that one into the national policy, enforcing it in real practice.
