Abstract
The purposes of this research were: 1) to study important principles in democracy 2) to study democratic principles in the Theravada Buddhist scripture and 3) to analyze democratic principles according to views on Theravada Buddhist philosophy. The study found that democratic principles in the Theravada Buddhist philosophy were in the aspects of dharma principles i.e. 1) principle of sovereignty 2) principle of Karma / Kalama Sutta 3) principle of the Three Characteristics 4) principle of formal act / decision according to the majority and 5) principle of Dharma-Vinaya. The research results indicated that democratic principles and principles in the Theravada Buddhist philosophy had both different and similar principles. The different principle was that democratic principles were the principle that made physical modesty, but the principles of the Theravada Buddhist philosophy emphasized the making of mental modesty. The similar principle was that democratic principles held the principle of democracy that people could participate in nation development. However, the Theravada Buddhist philosophy held the principle of Dharma-Vinaya that Buddhist monks could participate in development and management of hierarch affairs.
