Abstract
The purpose of this study is to compare the effectiveness of two approaches to the teaching of vocabulary. One strategy emphasized direct teaching of the individual meanings of target words. Another strategy emphasized teaching students to derive word meaning from context. The population in this study was 60 first year science students at King Mongkut Institute of Technology Morth Bangkok (MITN). The research design involved two groups of students with two different teaching technigues. The major findings are as follows: 1. Both teaching techniques: teaching vocabulary through definition of individual words and deriving meaning through context help the improvement of students vocabulary skill. 2. The technique of using context to discover the meaning of unknown words is a more effective way to vocabulary acquisition. 3. The skill of using context is an aid to successful reading. 4. The lexical knowledge is an important component of reading ability.
