Abstract
The purposes of this thesis were aimed: 1) to study the teaching dealing with 'pattidanamaya’ in Theravada Buddhist philosophy, 2) to pursue Buddhist’s beliefs and method of doing it in Buddhist philosophy and, 3) to analyze it in Buddhist philosophy. The research was based on the qualitative methodology, documentary research, resting upon the Tipitaka as the main source of data. In addition, relevant documents and Buddhist scholar’s research works were analyzed and systematically grouped. Then the research findings were summed up and presented in the analytical description. The research findings were found as follows: The teaching of 'Pattidanamaya’ in Buddhist philosophy referred to reactions and manners one expressed with delights in giving out things. To give out things in Buddhism included things given, knowledge and forgiveness to human beings and other animals. It could be classified according to .its scope into two types, giving out four requisites and dhammas - rendering academic knowledge as a piece of donation, offering forgiveness as a gift, in addition, it was found that the level of giving out was threefold. The primary level was to give out requisites, sharing four requisites or materials with others. The middle level was to abstain from bad deeds by observing five precepts. The high level was to bestow forgiveness and generosity as a donation. Having done merits and pattidanamaya, ones obtained four achievements. Beliefs and the method of pattidanamaya in Buddhist philosophy meant transference of merits, having the specific portion of acted merits been in one’s own mind, comprised two attributes - the merit received by the merit doer and the one which the doer wanted to dedicated to the deceased by numerous ways of transference of merits. There were four main types of transference of merits. They were performed with mental praying, speech, the spread of compassion and pouring water.
