Abstract
Nakhon Ratchasima or Korat is one of the top 7 tourist destinations in Thailand and is also a province with a variety of tourist attractions. Korat is a largest province in Thailand with many historical sites including more than 2000 temples. However; promoting Korat Historical Tourism still lacks the use of modern technology; especially Augmented Reality (AR). The objectives of this research were to design and develop a new mobile application called Korat Historical Explorer and to evaluated the usability of the mobile application. The application has 3 important AR usage modes consisting of 1) AR map mode is used for looking at the map in the form of print media to display 3D simulations of 10 tourist attractions in Korat. 2) AR landmark mode is used for viewing actual objects in their actual locations such as ancient art paintings and mural paintings to view relevant 3D images and 3) AR direction mode is used for leading the user to the important points of the tourist attractions. After the Korat Historical Explorer was developed; it was brought to nine experts in the field of AR for usability testing using a 5-point Likert scale questionnaires in five aspects: efficiency; effectiveness; flexibility; learnability; user satisfaction. The results revealed that the average usability of the application was rated at 4.04 of 5. The highest score was the efficiency of the application (4.53 of 5) while the lowest score was the learnability (3.44 of 5). The application learnability was improved by researchers. Then; 35 Tourists were asked to use and evaluate the mobile application using the same questionnaires as the experts. The results showed that the average usability of the application was rated at 4.37 of 5. The highest score was the efficiency of the application (4.45 of 5). The learnability was rated at 4.41 of 5.
