Abstract
This applied research project aimed to study the application of the Buddhist Five Precepts as implemented by two communities in Lampoon and Lopburi to promote peaceful cooperation. The researcher gathered and analyzed information from 59 subjects: Buddhist ecclesiastical monks, Buddhist monks, civil servants and the general public. The research tools comprise documentation, in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, seminars with stakeholders and meetings with experts in order to obtain details on the precepts-driven projects. The research found three main findings. First, the Huai Tom Community in Lampoon was motivated by both the Five Buddhist Precepts and the teachings of Krubaa Wong, a local monk. The integration of the Buddhist principles and traditional beliefs led to guidelines agreed upon by the local people. The project’s success was achieved in part by the faith of the local people in family households, temples, and schools. Second, the Taachang Community in Lopburi was initially driven by a policy from the Sangha (Buddhist) Supreme Council of Thailand, later joined by all stakeholders. The community instituted several activities to support professions and career development in accordance with the Five Precepts. As a result of the collaboration of all sectors including local people, private and government sectors, members of the local community became more financially self-reliant and more dedicated to Buddhist principles in their lives. Lastly, expansion and sustainability of the communities employing Buddhist precepts was able to develop through cooperation between networks of local people. The main tool used to achieve this was a consensus exemplified in a memorandum of understanding (MOU). Six factors of the MOU are 1) communication of the local people expressed via their representatives in every stage of participation in the community, 2) common goals set for the benefit of the public by the local people, 3) faith in religious and community leaders, 4) specific implementation plans, 5) activities designed to deal with community problems, and 6) the adaptation of Buddhist concepts to suit the local community.
