Abstract
The objectives of this thesis paper were as follows: 1) to study Khanti in Theravada Buddhist philosophy, 2) to study Khanti in Canda Jataka, and 3) to analyze the value of Khanti in Canda Jataka. The data of this documentary research were collected from the Tipitaka of Mahamakutrajavidyalaya B.E. 2505, Commentaries, Sub-commentaries, and concerned documents and articles The results of research were found as follows: 1. Khanti means patience or tolerance and it is called austerity in Buddhism. Khanti is the instrument in burning or destroying defilement. 2. Khanti in Canda Jataka was a story of life of the Buddha in the past. The Buddha cultivated Khanti perfection with his life as a bet. Khanti can keep the mind calm and normal, not checking with praise and blame, as the earth can bear the dirty and cleanness on it. Prince Canda cultivated Khanti perfection with his intention that he was ready to die but not to surrender referring to he was ready to die for goodness, not surrender to badness. 3. The advantage of Khanti is to be born in Brahma world after death. Issattha Sutta indicated that those who accomplished with Khanti and Soracca should have wisdom and should be treated as the noble ones, even they were from low caste families. Angulimala Sutta concluded that those who accomplished with Khanti could be respected by people, their fame could spread out far away and Khanti could end Kamma and its results. A verse in Dhammapada said that a dirty thing can be washed away with clean water, so Kamma and its results can be eradicated by Khanti and Metta.
