Abstract
In this thesis, the author focuses on Walter Benjamin’s technology theory and argues that the relationship between filming technology and smartphone development has democratized information, images, and events, granting individuals greater control. Filming is no longer exclusive to elites but accessible to the masses. People now have the right to film and be filmed, which is crucial for human development in a tech-driven world. The thesis draws from Walter Benjamin's film technology ideas and applies them to news and social media. It acknowledges the negative implications and emphasizes the importance of cultivating trust alongside human empowerment through video technology. The dissertation is comprised of five chapters. Chapter I presents an introduction of the overall background of the research, objectives, and significance of the study
as well as the research methodology employed. In chapter II, Walter Benjamin’s idea of technology is presented. Through his discussion of artistic production, he shows us how mechanical reproduction has changed the realm of art,and technology on news and technology to empower people. The power of filming connected to the development of the smartphone, leads to a kind of democratization which collapses high culture to the level of the individual person. Filming loses its elite quality and is brought down to the level of the masses. Gradually the development of video technology combined with social media have given people increasing access and empowerment over developing technology. These rights are important in people's essential development. In chapter III, the characteristics of journalism in the age of new media are described, as well as the changes in politics and democracy in the light of new technologies are discussed in relation to Benjamin's theory. In chapter IV, the focus is on how these potentials are and realized in social media platforms like TikTok. The development and popularity of smartphones has weakened the aura of professional photography and photography is no longer a skill that requires extensive training. TikTok is now the world's most popular app, which makes it extremely easy for anyone to become a video publisher. Technology has empowered us, but it has also allowed us to be manipulated by power for the sake of other interests. How we can make the best use of this empowerment when we are unable to avoid the flood of information and disinformation will be slightly discussed in this section. In Chapter V, the conclusion of this research asserts that the diffusion of modern technology to ordinary people has given them an empowerment which has great consequences for politics and society.
