Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate how effectively students can generate selfaccessmaterials for the Learn English from Songs corner in the Self-Access Centre(SAC) of King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT).The subjects of this study were divided into two groups: 11 fourth year students takingthe Oral Communication course who were material producers and 100 first and secondyear students who were the users of the materials.The researcher trained the 11 students to know the features of a self-access material(SAM) for two hours before having them produce the SAMs by themselves. Thestudents’ ability of producing the SAM was done by interviewing the materialsproducers about the problems they encountered when producing the SAMs andanalyzing their materials. The SAMs were corrected by the expert and they werereturned to the material producers to correct before the researcher piloted them with the100 students in the SAC. The results of this study showed that the students were able to generate the SAMs in terms of creating activities, giving answer keys, writing self-evaluation and suggestionsfor further study. However, while producing the SAMs they had some problems withidentifying the aim of the materials, giving instructions, creating variety of activitiesand adding self-evaluation with suggestions for further study. Such problems were theresults of the inadequate training, students’ proficiency and background knowledge ofproducing the SAMs. However, after the materials were corrected, the users showedtheir satisfaction to the materials. From the research, it can be seen that the students can be involved in producing the SAMs if they were trained and provided with enough essential background knowledge. Therefore, when training the students to produce the SAMs, it is necessary to make aconsideration for the training process and the knowledge needed for producing materials.
