Abstract
The study aims to analyze the attitude toward the happiness in Theravada Buddhist philosophy of layman and secular. The methodology is documentary research. The results revealed that the happiness of layman is sensational happiness that is occurred from the layman's normal and happy everyday living. Whereas the happiness of secular is mental happiness that is from the inner peace. The Lord Buddha, therefore, mentioned that secular’s happiness is more valuable than layman’s happiness. Although the layman’s sensational happiness is less valuable than secular’s mental happiness, the sensational happiness is still necessary for both layman and secular. The necessary for layman is that it makes people live normally according to their status and do not suffer too much from their living. The necessary for secular is that the sensational comfort helps the secular keeps calm and participating on their religious practice to reach more valuable happiness. The secular’s happiness is mental happiness caused from inner peace that omits all desires and sensuality. The secular’s happiness is purer and more intense than layman’s happiness because it contains less sorrow or suffering. This suits the priests who try to leave from the misery. This study mentioned about the happiness of layman and secular, however, the Buddhism thought does not mention that layman and secular must get only one kind of happiness (i.e. sensational or mental happiness). The happiness, actually, bases on individual practice and the understanding dharma.
