Abstract
This research paper explores the concept of multiculturalism as Derridean pharmakon, a word bearing meanings paradoxical beyond dualistic thinking, as reflected in a postmodernist short story entitled “Everything I Know about Central Europeanism (with a Little Friendly Help from Olomouc and Camus)” written in the 1960s by Pavel Vilikovský (1941- )and published only in 1996, after the Fall of the Berlin Wall and after the Velvet Divorce,as the writer resorted to self-censorship to avoid persecution in the time when the Soviet regime deprived the people in Central and Eastern Europe the rights to leave the region and first-handedly experience other cultures, or even their own culture and state of affairs with a critical mind, elsewhere. For a Central European, to know “everything one wishes to know about” Western Europeanismor even themselves is a luxury, of which dosage is strictly monitored and administered by the state. An analysis of Vilikovský’s short story reflects how multiculturalism functions as a pharmakon which deconstructs all binary oppositions and challenges the dualistic way of understanding the world,which Derrida perceives as the foundation stone of metaphysics and Western civilisation. Thinking of multiculturalism as a Derridean pharmakon will render problematic the allocation of absolute meanings to multiculturalism as either a poison or an idealist dream, as well as either a problem or a solution, as such allocation often leads to conflicts. A more in-depth understanding of multiculturalism and the present political situation might be found in the notion that the value and meaning of multiculturalism, like those of pharmakon, depend on the act of interpretation. Hence, multiculturalism does not possess one fixed meaning, but multiple meanings often rendered fixed and absolute by acts and measures of violence and extremism.
