Abstract
The purpose of this classroom-based research study is to investigate how students interact in groupwork with specific foci on twn-taking code-switching, discourse modifications and roles in groupwork. The study was carried out with 40 first-year students of the Computer Engineering Department at King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi. The four subjects of this study were randomly selected for close study. The research instrument used for data gathering was video recording. The material used in the experiment was a short excerpt from a video film "Honeymoon in Las Vegas", which provided a stimulus for groupwork interaction. The main findings of this research are as follows: Firstly, the information that the researcher obtained from investigating turn-tahg does not help very much in deciding how to improve turn-taking in groupwork. Secondly, equivalence is the most frequently ussd kind of code-switching. Thirdly, clarification requests are the most frequently ki~d used of discourse modificzltions. Finally, there are two possible problem concerning roles in groupwork, one is that some students may be passive by performing outside the group, the other is that some students may dominate the group by acting as a goup leader. Suggestions conceming how to solve groupwork problems based on these findings are given.
