บทความวิจัยนี้เป็นการศึกษาบทบาทของตำนานประวัติศาสตร์และเทพปกรณัมจีนที่ปรากฎในนิยายเรื่อง ความฝันในหอแดง จากการวิจัยพบว่ามีตำนานประวัติศาสตร์และเทพปกรณัมจีนหลายเรื่องปรากฏในนิยายเรื่อง ความฝันในหอแดง มีทั้งเรื่องราวของบุคคล สัตว์ สิ่งของที่มีที่มาจากตำนานประวัติศาสตร์และเทพปกรณัมจีน บทบาทและหน้าที่ของตำนานประวัติศาสตร์และเทพปกรณัมจีนแต่ละเรื่องมีบทบาทแตกต่างกันไป นอกจากนี้การศึกษาตำนานประวัติศาสตร์และเทพปกรณัมจีนที่ปรากฏในนิยายเรื่อง ความฝันในหอแดง ยังทำให้ทราบว่าเทพปกรณัมจีนเรื่องเทพธิดาหนี่ว์วาซ่อมแซมท้องฟ้า (女媧補天) เป็นที่มาสำคัญในการสร้างตัวละครเอกที่สำคัญในเรื่องนี้
