Abstract
This thesis attempts to present the information on long consonants in Pattani which occur in word initial position as the result of word and phrase shortening. It may be said that every word with long consonants was derived from an original full form. Long consonants may be substitutes for initial syllables of full polysyllabic stems or affixed words, or for the whole preceding words in compound words and some phrases. As a general principle, long consonants in Pattani Malay are mainly the result of the shortening of polysyllabic words to disyllabic words. Besides, there are also monosyllabic words with long consonants which were derived from disyllabic words, but this case is not significant because they fluctuate with their counterparts without long consonants. Word and phrase shortening, especially the shortening with long consonants affects Pattani Malay at phonological, morphological and syntactical levels. It may be said that the changes occur systematically and the systems of change are discussed in this thesis. Word and phrase shortening in Pattani Malay does not produce only shortened words with long consonants but also shortened words without long consonants. This thesis also discusses word and phrase shortening without long consonants.
