Abstract
This dissertation is of 3 objectives: 1) to study the history, development and importance of the Cariyapitaka Manuscripts, 2) to transliterate and verify the Banhong Luang Temple’s Cariyapitaka Manuscripts, 3) to analyze it’s value and influence towards Lanna society. The findings are that : the Palm Leaf Buddhist Manuscripts in the various forms of Lanna Literatures, especially the Cariyapitaka included in Suttanta Pitaka is grouping in Khuddhakanikaya. It told the way of the Bodhisatva’s pastoral actions. In addition, there is it’s commentary named “Paramatthadipani”. It explains the Buddha’s teachings in the very simple style in order to easily understand. On the transliteration of Banhong Luang’s Cariyapitaka Manuscripts, they are totally 20 bindings having inscribed by Venerable Phramaha Surapanyo Bhikkhu in C.E. 925(B.E. 2106). This transliteration is based on the general Transliteration from Lanna to Modern Thai. Furthermore, the Pali words have to grammatically correct. This Banhong Luang’s Cariyapitaka was composed by word to word translation following to Lanna poetry style. The such Lanna transliteration is so beautiful in language composition and it’s meaning. The value of this manuscripts is represented as the core religious texts that the novices and the monks having deeply studied, at the same time, shall well understand both the Pali and Lanna language. On it’s influence, that is to say, the reader can live the life according to the Bodhisatva’s way of life, to be the moral or virtuous man. On the comparison of Cariyapitaka Commentary and the Banhong Luang’s Cariyapitaka, the differences are found only in the details of event and the Lanna translation, but, any differences in the main principle and essences are not found in both Texts.
