| dc.description.abstract | The purpose of this research is to analyze and find the meaning of “Søren Aabye Kierkegaard’s Concept of Subjectivity” in the philosophical sense by comparing it with the modern thinkers from both the early and later modern period. It was found that the topic of subjectivity in the perspective of early modern thinkers such as Descartes, Locke, Hume, and Kant were interested in the subject only from the perspective of epistemology. On the other hand, the later modern thinkers such as Fichte and Hegel changed the topic to speculation and viewed it from the perspective of subjectivity as in the subject who is able to consciously reason and aim for the highest freedom. In Kierkegaard’s view, the account of subjectivity should begin from the position of human existence which is obviously concrete. Moreover, since speculation with doctrine is just a hypothesis, it unable to lead human beings to find their own meaning of existence. Kierkegaard believed that human existence is fundamentally finite, temporal, and has its own value in the world, hence every existence has its meaning of “being” in the world. However, since social activity and the crowd ignored the individual task of finding their own meaning of existence, the subjects become alienated and introverted. This situation lead them to feel despair and fear to make a decision and fear to take responsibility for their own life Kierkegaard urged every human being to search for their own meaning of life by using reflection, passion, faith, decision and responsibility for themselves. Nevertheless, according to Kierkegaard, since human beings are finite, the subjects are unable to reach their own true meaning and true-self unless they depend themselves on something higher which Kierkegaard calls “God.” | |
