Abstract
This article presents the concept of discourse by Michel Foucault as the concept is pertained with truth and knowledge that is the formation of language, power or any actions in everyday lives of people. Accordingly, discourse is a limit, it is limited in the sense of both confining one in the boundary of knowledge and truth, and in the sense of limitation of freedom that imprison one in the bondage. Therefore, having freedom is not only changing of regimes or revolutions, but is to be transgressed from truth, knowledge, power or in other words, all kinds of discourse that confine one in those bondages. Foucault called it under the name of “transgression.” It is for sure that by the conditions of discourse, it is barely possible, but it maybe just for this a limitation of this epoch. Thus, this article observes Foucault’s determination to engage with transgression and turn them empirical by using analogy, literature or by everyday life practice. Even though in the end, he found that only awareness is the only way nearest to transgression under one’s ability in this epoch.
