Abstract
This classroom-based research study investigates how comparing literal and non-literal translation benefits the teaching and learning of writing. This study also assesses whether this technique helps to raise language awareness. The population of the study consisted of 39 first-year undergraduatesfrom the Department of Mechanical Engineering at King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi. The researcher analyzed the data from 13 subjects. The instruments used were two students' tasks, which included an L1 writing task, an L2 literal translation of it, and a grammatically correct, non-literal translation, as well asstudents' journals. From the study, it was found that the mistakes in the non-literal translation version of the second task decreased. This implies that the students improved their writing ability. Regarding learning, the students learned about grammatical differences between L1 and L2.This helped them to raise their awareness. Moreover, the students also had a positive attitude towards this technique. As a practical application, teacher might apply the knowledge of these differences in their teaching to support their learners' written English appropriately. However, the study shows that the students faced difficulties during the two writing 'tasks. The main reason was that they did not have enough language knowledge.
