Abstract
The objectives of the thesis are divided into three; (1) to study concept and theory of textual hermeneutics in Theravada Buddhism with a comparison to the hermeneutical concept and theory of the western world, (2) to present the hermeneutical pattern in Theravada Buddhism, and (3) to analyze the concept and hermeneutical method of the following selected topics; Santi Asok’s Mamsaviratti (To avoid meat-eating) Dhamakaya’s Nibbana, and Phra Brahmagunabhorn (P.A. Payutto)’s Mamsaviratti and Nibbana. From the Study, it was found that hermeneutical concepts and theories of both Buddhism and Western world, have the same goal i.e., to realize the truth the righteous and the good via language as an instrument for communication. Both schools of thought have developed one our hermeneutical concepts and theories. When we emphasize on the details of the process of hermeneutical concepts and theories of both, they are different. While Western hermeneutical pattern emphasize on finding the truth via three theories separately, they are the Author-centric, the Text-centric and the Reader-centric hermeneutics, Buddhism holds that in order to find out the perfect meanings, all factors, no matter what part they are, whatever author text or reader, as well as their social contexts, are important all are interdependent. From this concept, the researcher modifies and forms the pattern of hermeneutical concepts and theories in Theravada Buddhism. This new pattern of hermeneutics when applied to Santi Asok’s interpretation of Mamsaviratti and Dhammakaya’s interpretation of Nibbana was found that Sani Asok’s interpretation is the Reader-centric form and the Author-centric form in some respect, Dhammakaya’s interpretation is the Reader-centric form with the help of other texts. In the case of Phra Brahmagunabhorn (P.A. Payutto)’s interpretation it was found the Text-centric form and also the Author-centric form in some respect.
