Abstract
Le discours traductologique thaï tend à assimiler sous l’étiquette du «problème de traduction» questions linguistiques et questions culturelles. Qu’il s’agisse d’écarts entre expressions de deux langues données, de références étrangères méconnues ou à connotations différentes, la problématique est fréquemment envisagée comme découlant de «différences culturelles». Quant au traitement des disparités entre les deux cultures, les traductologues privilégient l’explication à la fonction - qui nécessite une adaptation - de crainte d’enfreindre la règle de la «fidélité». Cet article entend mettre en valeur l’analyse «fonctionnelle» appliquée aux éléments culturels, et l’analyse des «destinataires» que devra servir la traduction. Le résultat de la démarche devrait aider les apprentis-traducteurs dans leur choix de restitution du rôle que jouent les réalités culturelles. Il s’agit de répondre au besoin des utilisateurs de la traduction en respectantles critères de la «fidélité» telle que la sous-tend la Théorie Interprétative de la Traduction: être fidèle au vouloir dire de l’auteur et au destinataire de la traduction grâce à une équivalence fonctionnelle entre l’original et l’œuvre traduite.
Cultural transfer appears to be one of the main problems often referred to in translation studies in Thailand. These discussions usually combine language differences with cultural disparity. The former implies diverging linguistic expressions, and the latter an absence of cultural referents or referents with different connotations in the receptive culture. In order to solve problems originating from cultural discrepancies, translation theorists encourage information addition rather than functional adaptation, which they consider as an unfaithful translation. This article puts an emphasis on the functional analysis of culture-bound elements as well as on the analysis of the translation users. This procedure should help translation students make an appropriate choice of rendition, which restores the function of the given cultural referent. In so doing, they will have taken into account the users’ needs and expectations while conforming to the Interpretive Theory of Translation’s rules of fidelity: i.e., being faithful to the author’s intended meaning and to the translation users by means of functional equivalence between the original and the translated texts.
