Abstract
The purpose of this classroom-based research study is to investigate theeffects of training in using sentence analysis on students' reading comprehension.The subjects of the experiment were four first year Electronics andCommunication Engineering students at King Mongkut's University of TechnologyThonburi. The instruments used for data gathering were: pre- and post test, scoreprofile, semi-structured interview, students' diaries and teacher's diary.In order to train the students to analyze sentence structure, the students wereprovided with four strategies, namely, how to analyze the basic sentence elements,how to analyze meaningful units, how to predict what kinds of information will begiven in the sentence and how to identitj, a relative clause.The findings of this research study revealed that using sentence analysisinfluenced students' reading comprehension. It was found that apart fiom theknowledge of sentence structure, knowing the meaning of vocabulary and ha;vingbackground knowledge on what was being read also dected their comprehension.The training in using sentence analysis raised their awareness of syntactic structure andenabled them to gain more confidence in reading. Also, the students revealed positiveattitudes towards this technique because they found that it was helpful and effective fortheir reading comprehension.
