Abstract
The objectives of the research are: (1) to study the concept of fear in general context, (2) to study fear and its causes in Theravada Buddhist Philosophy, and (3) to study solutions to fear management in Buddhism. The data relevant to the fear are collected from the Tipitaka and other research works. The results of this research are as follows : 1. In psychology, fear is a kind of unstable feeling occurred from reaction to the external impetus. Also, fear is an emotion attached to everyday life of man. According to psychiatry, fear is characterized into three kinds
(1) Specific/Simple Phobias, (2) Social Phobias and (3) Agoraphobia. In psychologist's perspective, the remedy of fear is to try to encourage and build confidence in the patient. Sometimes, antidepressants, acupuncture, behavioral therapy, hypnosis, yoga, and mental cure are applied. From the analysis of fear appeared in the Tipitaka, it is found that the fear in Theravada Buddhist Philosophy is different from psychological fear. 2. The fear in Theravada Buddhist philosophy is due to human ignorance or incorrect knowledge of the Three Common Characteristics. According to the Three Common Characteristics, everything is impermanent, unsatisfactory or suffering, and non-self. Human beings are trapped in defilements, causing them to commit what is called “ kamma” . Kamma includes not only good actions, but also actions troubling others in society. The persons do these actions to free themselves from fear but that contrast with the principles of Theravada Buddhist Philosophy. 3. According to Theravada Buddhist Philosophy, mindfulness can reduce fear in all actions in living a life. Mindfulness will make the mind tranquil. With the tranquil mind, a person can realize the Three Common Characteristics, lead to relaxation and finally reduce fear.
