Abstract
After studying ideas regarding Buddhist Cosmology that appear in the layout of Indrawasa Temple in the Hang Dong District of Chiang Mai Province, the researcher found that Indrawasa Temple is the only private monastery that doesn’t emphasize Buddhist cosmological principles in its layout as other famous temples (for instance, the royal monastery) do. Since the layout of some parts of the construction of the temple do not show a correspondence to the Buddhist cosmological concepts generally present in the layout of others temples, or to even the specific forms of Buddhist Cosmology found in the layout of temples in Lanna. Most importantly, the researcher finds that the concepts of Buddhist Cosmology that appear in the layout of Indrawasa Temple, in the Hang Dong District of Chiang Mai Province, do not completely cover the significance, characteristics, constituents and structure of Buddhist Cosmology, since there are parts of the temple’s construction that conform to concepts of Buddhist Cosmology, and parts that do not. Furthermore, there isn’t a clear symbolic representation of Buddhist cosmological concepts, because the researcher’s studies of Buddhist cosmological ideas and interviews with scholars deeply knowledgeable in Buddhism convey a representation of the aforementioned concepts in numerous elements of temple construction, such as the cloister around a temple hall that follows the Lanna tradition, which can symbolize the wall of universe. If a temple hall in the tradition of Lanna is instead taken to represent Mount Meru, the cloister around the hall can represent all four major continents surrounding Mount Meru as well. However, the cloister in Indrawasa Temple cannot be taken to represent the four major continents around Mount Meru (Jambudvipa to the South, Aparagodaniya to the West, Uttarakuru to the North and Purvavideha to the East) completely, because the Eastern cloister is missing. When the researcher analyzed by overall image, the layout planning of Indrawasa Temple at Hang Dong District, Chiang Mai Province emphasises the advantage of usibility more than on the concept of Buddhist cosmological directly and when the layout of Indrawasa Temple does not in line with the concept of Buddhist cosmological, the researcher thinks that Indrawasa Temple might use The Triple Jewels moral for the temple planning as same as Lanna style that shows the symbolic meaning of the composition in the temple.
