วิทยานิพนธ์นี้ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาความหมายของประโยคที่มีคำ ทำไม อยู่ในตำแหน่งต้นประโยคและท้ายประโยค ทั้งในด้านอรรถศาสตร์และวัจนปฏิบัติศาสตร์ รวมถึงวิเคราะห์ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างความหมายกับตำแหน่งของคำดังกล่าว ผลกการศึกษาในเชิงอรรถศาสตร์ พบว่าประโยคที่มีคำ ทำไม อยู่ในตำแหน่งต้นประโยค จะสื่อถึง "ปัจจัยกระตุ้น" ซึ่งเป็นสิ่งที่เกิดนำเหตุการณ์มา ส่วนประโยคที่มีคำ ทำไม อยู่ในตำแหน่งท้ายประโยค จะสื่อถึง "เป้าประสงค์" ซึ่งเป็นสิ่งที่เกิดตามหลังเหตุการณ์ หรือเป็นผลของเหตุการณ์ ปรากฏการณ์นี้ แสดงให้เห็นความสอดคล้องระหว่างรูปภาษากับความหมายได้อย่างชัดเจน อย่างไรก็ตาม ประโยคที่มีคำ ทำไมอยู่ที่ต้นประโยคสามารถสื่อถึงเป้าประสงค์ได้ด้วย เมื่อผู้พูดมีมุมมองว่า เป้าประสงค์จัดเป็นปัจจัยกระตุ้นอย่างหนึ่ง ในด้านวัจนปฏิบัติศาสตร์ พบว่ารูปประโยคที่มีคำ ทำไม สามารถใช้สื่อวัจนกรรมอื่นๆ ที่นอกเหนือจากการถามได้อีก 7 วัจนกรรม ได้แก่ การแนะนำ การขอร้อง การสั่ง การตำหนิ การโต้แย้ง การแสดงความรู้สึกในแง่ลบ และการชม คำ ทำไม ในถ้อยคำที่ใช้สื่อวัจนกรรมเหล่านี้ จะใช้เพื่อชักจูงหรือผลักดันให้ผู้ฟังเห็นว่า มีการกระทำอื่นที่มี เหตุผล กว่า และเป็นการเปิดช่องเพื่อแสดงความคิดโต้แย้ง อย่างไรก็ตาม การสื่อวัจนกรรมต่างๆ ด้วยถ้อยคำที่มีคำ ทำไม มีความเสี่ยงที่จะทำให้เกิดความไม่สุภาพขึ้นได้ โดยระดับความสุภาพของถ้อยคำดังกล่าวจะขึ้นอยู่กับระดับความเป็นคำถามที่ผู้ฟังอนุมานได้ นอกจากนี้ พบกรณีที่ คำ ทำไม สามารถใช้โดยลำพังในฐานะหน่วยผลัดหนึ่งหน่วย ซึ่งสามารถสื่อความหมายเชิงอารมณ์ทัศนคติได้ 2 แบบได้แก่ การท้าทาย และการรำพัน คำ ทำไม ที่ปรากฏลำพังดังกล่าวนี้ถือเป็นดัชนีปริเฉท และเมื่อใช้เป็นดัชนีปริจเฉท เสียงของคำ ทำไม ก็มีการแปรไปในลักษณะเดียวกันกับที่พบในดัชนีปริจเฉทส่วนใหญ่
This study aims at examining the semantic and pragmatic meaning of sentences with the word thammay in the sentence-initial and sentence-final positions. It also investigates the relationship between the position and the meaning of thammay. The study shows that the sentence with thammay inthe sentence-initial position focuses on the "cause", or a factor which motivates an event. The sentence with thammay in the sentence-final position focuses on the "purpose", or a factor which is a consequence of an event. This is an indication of iconicity between syntax and meaning ; however, the sentence with thammay at the beginning of the sentence can also be interpreted as focusing on purpose, when the purpose is taken as a motivation of an event. Pragmatically, sentences with thammay can be used to carry seven indirect speech acts : advice, request, order, blaming, dispute, complaint and admiration. thammay is deliberately used in these utterances in order to convince the listener that there are certain reasons involved in making these utterances and there is room for argument. However, in performing these acts, there is a risk of impoliteness, depending on the degree of assertiveness implied. In addition, the word thammay is found to be used as a single turn constructional unit, signifying a chalenge or a regret, this means that thammay can also function as a discourse marker. When used as a discourse marker, thammay exhibits the usual phonological variations found in most discourse markers.
