    The Study of Cultural Impact on The Adaptation Process of Thai Exchange Students In Mexico

    This research aims at 1) identifying the main cultural factors that hinder the adaptation process of Thai exchange students in Mexico and 2) analyzing the causes and effects of such difficulties towards the adaptation of those students. Both objectives can be explained and analyzed through the cultural dimensions of Greet Hofstede. In the methodological part, Thai AFS exchange students of the last four generations with most recent exchange experiences during year program from 2014 to 2018 were selected as our sample population. Quantitative data collection was carried out via the questionnaires which were distributed to 34 participants with 27 respondents, meanwhile qualitative research included 8 interviewees who were randomly selected, 2 people from each generation. The result of the study revealed that most of the study subjects agreed that the lack of Mexican intercultural awareness was one of the dominant factors that adversely influenced the process of their adaptation in Mexico. The cultural barriers that had negatively impacted those Thai exchange students were Mexican host society or community (51.85%) and Mexican customs and traditions (48.15%). Conversely, most Thai participants showed a slight concern about the social and cultural adjustment on the following issues: school (3.7%), food (7.40%), climatic and geographical conditions (22.22%) and family (22.22), respectively.
