Abstract
The purpose of this classroom-based research study is to examine the extent towhich enhancing risk-taking in speaking increases students’ participation in theclassroom. This study was carried out with 26 first year undergraduates from theDepartment of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, King Mongkut’s University ofTechnology Thonbuti &MUTT), with 6 of the students chosen as subjects. Theinstruments used for data collection were observation checksheets, students’ diaries.teacher’s diary, observer’s diary, questionnaires, video tape, and s8erni-structuredinterviews. In order to investigate whether risk-taking in speaking could help students toincrease participation in the classroom the researcher used three types of speamactivities; problem-so- debate, and oral presentation as tools to provide students’chances to practice speaking in the classroom and also take risks in speakring. The findings of this research study revealed that enhancing risk-taking inspeaking fairly helped increase students’ participation in the classroom. In additionthe students had positive attitudes towards the use of the speaking activities whichmeant that the students perceived risk-taking as one type of behaviour to drive them tospeak more. Furthermore, the students perceived risk-taking as challenging andinterest& a tool to build up self-confidence, and a tool to develop speaking skills.
