| dc.description.abstract | The mother-and-housewife emerged as a gender construct in the first half of the 20th century. Drawing upon archivaland published sources, this article argues that the mother-and-housewife was initiallydefined in the discursive field of differentiation between the “good woman” and the “bad woman” during the colonial era. Its meanings were shaped with reference to the family as a basic unit of the nation,Buddhism as one of the pillars of Thainess, and science as a symbolof modernity. From the Revolution of 1932 to the early Cold War, the mother-and-housewife model was promotedbythe state as it wascampaigning for women’s culture, initiating a National Mother’s Fair, and improving education and public health for women. | en |
