บทความนี้ศึกษาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างการเดินทางกับการเรียนรู้ประวัติศาสตร์ของชนชั้นนำไทยในช่วงทศวรรษ 2370 ถึงทศวรรษ 2460 ชนชั้นนำปลายรัชกาลที่ 3 มีความคิดที่จะเรียนรู้ประวัติศาสตร์ผ่านมุมมองแบบประจักษ์นิยม จึงอาศัยการเดินทางเป็นวิธีสืบหาข้อมูลเพื่อนำมาใช้วิเคราะห์พงศาวดาร การเลือกใช้พงศาวดารเป็นต้นแบบเพื่อสืบค้นหลักฐานผ่านการเดินทาง ทำให้การเรียนรู้ประวัติศาสตร์ของชนชั้นนำไทยไม่สามารถออกจากแนวคิดที่เน้นกษัตริย์เป็นศูนย์กลางได้ เพราะข้อเท็จจริงที่ค้นพบตามหลักวิธีดังกล่าวได้กลายเป็นหลักฐานเชิงประจักษ์ที่กำหนดมุมมองชั้นนำไทย
This article aims at finding the connection between traveling and the learning of history of Thai elites during the period of 1820-1910’s. Thai elites during King Rama III’s reign attempted to learn history by way of empirical studies. They, therefore, visited historical sites to collect information for analyzing the existing chronicles. This method of study, however, is inevitably centered on the monarchy and thus compels a specific and limited perception of the past.
