    Happy Ending, Happy Readers? Questionable Simplification in an Adapted Version of Greek Mythology

    The aim of this paper is to have educators contemplate the reading materials selected for children. Three chapters of The Stories of Greek Heroes, a simplified version of Greek mythology used in an eighth-grade English reading class at a Thai secondary school in the 1990s and 2000s, were selected for discussion. They are compared and contrasted to their equivalent chapters in Edith Hamilton’s Mythology, a text chosen for a third-year English class at the Faculty of Arts of a Thai university during the same period of time. This paper analyzes the nine differences between these two versions of Greek mythology, which were selected for readers of different ages, and how certain messages constrained in the stories may affect younger readers’ minds. Moreover, the pros and cons of the eighth-grade version are also discussed. While proponents of simplification argue that the intention behind the censorship of particular aspects is to protect young minds and society, those against it focus on depicting an authentic view of society and humanity and particularly on preparing students for the real world. In short, realism proponents believe in presenting a text that shows what the world is whereas simplification advocates prefer to depict what should be. Potentially, a supervised setting is an answer for both sides. If educators carefully examine the advantages and disadvantages of simplification, they should be able to choose appropriate reading materials or a fitting means with which to educate their students and responsibly help their students effectively relate textual meanings to what they experience in their real lives.

    Medusa Myth: Reflecting Human Collective Experiences of the Femaleness

    This essay deliberates on an interpretation of the Medusa myth in Greek mythology through two psychoanalitical approaches: Sigmund Freud’s theory of castration, and Carl G. Jung’s theory of the Archetype. Based on psychoanalytical concepts, certain logical conclusions regarding sexuality that differentiate men and women are reflected in this myth, serving as a part of human psychological development established in the society in the form of social norms and rites. These logical conclusions, illustrated and interpreted through characterization in the story, bring to light psychoanalytical concepts toward sexuality related to the following: 1) why the character Medusa is presented as a monstrous creature with destructive powers to turn men who gaze at her into stone, and 2) how the relationships between this female character and other characters including Perseus, the protagonist in this hero myth, Goddess Athena, and Danaë Perseus’s mother apply.

    ‘So Hydous was the Noyse’: Forgetting the 1381 Rebellion in Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Nun’s Priest’s Tale

    Since the medieval period, memory has been considered a site of identity formation and an important cultural force. Forgetting, on the other hand, has been dismissed because it seems impossible to study or recover what has already been forgotten. This study argues to the contrary. I focus on forgetting as a significant cultural practice, allowing the ruling classes and social institutions to perpetuate ideologies and manipulate how history is represented. In so arguing, I choose one of the most renowned events in medieval England as the subject of my study, which is the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381. This Rebellion has been commemorated by many medieval authors, including Geoffrey Chaucer in The Nun’s Priest’s Tale from The Canterbury Tales. In this particular tale, I contend that Chaucer uses ‘everyday’ language and description of life in a rural village to erase the memory of the turbulence and boisterousness of the Revolt. Through this narrative of everyday life, the upheaval of the Revolt is forgotten and it is reduced to a story of another barnyard commotion.

    The Representation of Family Diversity in The Family Book: A Verbal and Visual Analysis

    Picturebooks are effective media to raise children’s awareness of various social problems, including family diversity. This study aims to investigate how family diversity is represented verbally and visually in a picturebook entitled The Family Book and elaborate on the signification of the representation. This descriptive qualitative study focuses on finding the ideational meaning by identifying the type of processes used in the clauses and images of the picturebook and the intersemiotic relation between them. The data were analyzed by employing Halliday’s transitivity system, Kress and Leeuwen’s visual grammar, and Royce’s intersemiotic complementarity. The findings showed that for the verbal representation, the most dominant process used in the picturebook is a relational process that is used to identify something or assign a quality. For the visual representation, the predominant process used in the images is a symbolic attributive process. Through the relational and symbolical processes, the diverse identities and characteristics of families are presented and implicitly can determine the types of those families. Additionally, the intersemiotic analysis has found that the working together of the verbal and visual modes in the picturebook have created repetitions and meronymies. These results imply that family diversity in The Family Book is represented as normality. Family diversity as a normal thing is attempted to be explained to the readers not only to enhance their understanding of family but also to influence them to accept the variation of families in society.
