| dc.description.abstract | This article explores the spatial relationship between the city of Los Angeles and the concept of love in Spike Jonze’s critically acclaimed 2013 science fiction film, Her. At first glance, Jonze’s film seems like a study on man and technology as its narrative follows the relationship between a male protagonist, Theodore Twombly, and a hyper-intelligent operating system (OS), Samantha, from the honeymoon period to their separation. A closer look at the film reveals a parallelism between overly connected urban design of the futuristic Los Angeles and the progression of the characters’ relationship in the plot structure. Lingering on the boundary of utopian/dystopian dimension of perfect/oppressive order, Jonze’s Los Angeles adopts a paradoxical spatial definition of being a connected space without any tangible contact. By reading the protagonists’ relationship in accordance with the film’s spatial design of Los Angeles through Alain Badiou’s framework of love as an embracement of risk and chance, Her exposes the fragility of technological connectivity in contemporary society. | |
