This article explores the spatial relationship between the city of Los Angeles and the concept of love in Spike Jonze’s critically acclaimed 2013 science fiction film, Her.  At first glance, Jonze’s film seems like a study on man and technology as its narrative follows the relationship between a male protagonist, Theodore Twombly, and a hyper-intelligent operating system (OS), Samantha, from the honeymoon period to their separation. A closer look at the film reveals a parallelism between overly connected urban design of the futuristic Los Angeles and the progression of the characters’ relationship in the plot structure. Lingering on the boundary of utopian/dystopian dimension of perfect/oppressive order, Jonze’s Los Angeles adopts a paradoxical spatial definition of being a connected space without any tangible contact. By reading the protagonists’ relationship in accordance with the film’s spatial design of Los Angeles through Alain Badiou’s framework of love as an embracement of risk and chance, Her exposes the fragility of technological connectivity in contemporary society.

This research paper examines the New Woman figure by paying attention to her beauty which stands out through its reminiscence of Pre-Raphaelitism. A focus on Mary Ward’s Rose Leyburn, the girl violinist in Robert Elsmere (1888) and Lucas Malet’s Mary Crookenden, the talented art student in The Wages of Sin (1890), allows a fruitful comparison with six paintings by Dante Gabriel Rossetti. The analysis leads to a conclusion that Rose fits the appearance of these Pre-Raphaelite women particularly when considering her beauty that is not only visual but also vital and vibrant as they mobilise her and boost her confidence finally to gain her entrance into the public sphere. In the past; a critical scene in film studies requires an expertise of analysts to verify the axiological paradigm. This paradigm refers to study the formalist criticism in film settings. Hence; the comprehensive of natural film concepts needs to be required; if we want the empowerment to criticize a scene design in film studies. On the other hand; this research tried to experiment the new alternative way to criticize a scene design in (horror) film studies by using scientific methods along with phenomenal studies to identify the formalist criticism in film settings. We applied a face detection technique to study the relationship between eyetracking and face expressions to analyze and suggested the new alterative design of formalism in a film setting. The key variables that were analyzed consist of eight elements; 1) neutral; 2) happiness; 3) surprise; 4) anger; 5) disgust; 6) fear; 7) sadness and 8) eye-tracking position. The key results of this experiment found average scores of movie clip 1 have more surprise feeling than other movies at 1.45 points. Meanwhile; the highness scores with fear feeling is the movie clip 3 at 0.27 points.
